The Pavilion, a Grade II listed building dating from 1923, was originally constructed as a cinema. The building is currently unused, and presents an opportunity to give a much loved, but neglected building a new lease of life.
The building will be converted into a new four-star, 220 room hotel with associated leisure and retail facilities. To incorporate the new functions, the interiors of the building (which had previously been extensively altered) are removed, along with sections of the rear elevation. The primary façades are retained with modifications to bring natural light into the rooms behind. The building is completed with a new glazed roof, which follows the curved profile of the original.
The concept derives from a detailed understanding of the building’s history and context. The result is a contemporary response that complements and refines the original character of the building.
